An isolation transformer consists of a primary and a secondary coil winding that are electrically separated by a main insulation. This limits the risk of electrocution when the active parts and the earth are touched simultaneously. An autotransformer has a primary and a secondary coil winding that are partly shared. As such, smaller sizes can offer the same capacity.
